Batik Fabric, Bali


Batik is a cloth that is traditionally made using the wax and the natural dyes. It is the most popular and used type of fabric in entire Indonesia.


Balinese batik is characterized by bright and vibrant colors, which the tie dye technique blends into a smooth gradation of color with many shades.

The process involves the drawing of the design using tjanting tool as seen below.




Melted wax is applied to cloth before being dipped in dye. It is common for people to use a mixture of beeswax and paraffin wax.
 The beeswax will hold to the fabric and the paraffin wax will allow cracking, which is a characteristic of batik.
Sometimes several colours are used, with a series of dyeing, drying and waxing steps.


Once the wax is dried, the other colors (which are only derived from nature) are applied if required.
After the completion of the entire design the fabric is dipped in the dye for the required color.

At last, it's boiled for sufficient time to remove the wax.
